The Lord calls us “to stand” – to turn our minds from its troubling thoughts of the future and to focus on Him. When we have crossroads ahead of us and are unsure which way to go as we move forward, God reminds us to look for the “ancient paths.” These are the roads of trouble that have been well traveled by the saints of the faith and their footsteps have made it into a path of glory to God. This is the “good way” and we need to walk in it. When we do, we will find rest for our souls.
The Lord always hears our voice and our cries for mercy. Because of this, we can rely on Him to always be there to help. When we’re in distress, He is right there. We just need to remember to call to Him. No matter how bad things are or how low we’ve gone, He is there to help us. God doesn’t just listen to our cries, but is merciful to them. Even when we’re at our worst or when we’re giving up hope in our anguish, He is there. Even while we’re completely overcome by trouble or sorrow, we can call on the name of the Lord to save us, and He will. The Lord is gracious, righteous, and full of compassion for His children who trust Him enough to choose to reach out for help. When we choose to be simplehearted or completely honest and forthright with the Lord, He will step in to protect us and our vulnerabilities and save us from destruction. He knows exactly what we need. He will provide everything. Remember that we need to call to the Lord for help and refuse to pursue our own solutions. Let God in and let Him work. Move aside and marvel at what He does. God has all wisdom and counsel to do what is best. Our hearts will scream out to “seek His face!” So, do it! Then when we have done this – following God’s will – we will find rest for our souls. This is because this is what we long for and what the Lord desires for His children. Our souls can be at complete rest because of the Lord’s goodness. Learn to seek the ancient paths – following the same footsteps as other saints who have succeeded and reaped God’s goodness and found rest for their souls.
